Simple Toilet Repair for the Unhandy
Everyone has been there. Either the toilet refuses to flush or it overflows. Like everything else in your home, you will need to do some toilet repair at one point or another. However, before you call New Age Plumbing, there are a few things you can try on your own.
A Few Steps to Take
Regardless of what the issue is, the first thing you want to do is turn off the water. Find the valve on the wall under the tank and turn it clockwise until the tank and bowl stop filling. This will limit the amount of water you need to clean up if you had an overflow and is also a good safety measure.
If your toilet is clogged, the next step in toilet repair is to use the plunger. Be sure it is big enough to cover the opening at the bottom of the bowl and that there is enough water to cover it. Next, place the suction cup over the opening at the bottom of the bowl and pump it forcefully and evenly, five to 10 times. You should then start to hear a gurgling in the pipe and feel some pressure building. At this point, you can break the seal and see if the clog comes loose. If it does not, you can try again.
The Problem is Worse Than You Thought…
If the clog comes up, try and flush, but do not the water back on. If the water flushes by itself after plunging, you can go ahead and turn the water back on. Let it run for a few minutes and when the water settles, you can try flushing it again. You need to watch carefully in order to make sure it does not start to overflow. If it does, shut it off as quickly as possible. If you are still having issues, it may be best to call in a professional for additional toilet repair.
Some homeowners like to try to use a snake which gets out clogs that are deep in the pipes. However, misuse can lead to broken pipes. If your problem is a toilet that won’t stop running, then open the top of the tank and ensure that enough water is getting in to turn off the pipes. If this is the case, turn the water valve under the tank counterclockwise until the right level is reached.
