Shut Off Valves

Knowing where to find the shut off valves for your home’s water supply is a huge part of plumbing repair. This is useful to know for when you are checking for leaks, or trying to find the location a particular leak. It also will allow you work on repairs without getting soaked or raising your water bill.

There are two types of shut off valves. The first is for the home in general and will usually be on the side of the house. Look for a round or square metal cover. It will probably have the water company on it. Inside this will be a knob, similar to a water hose usually. Twisting left or right, depending, will turn the water off. Please note that this valve only stops water, and does it gradually. This means you will have some water running for a bit, until the reserve runs out. The emergency shut off valve works faster and is for emergencies. This is more for the toilet, and is usually just behind on the wall. Turning this valve will cut the water immediately, stopping an overflowing toilet.

Sewer and Water Lines

All homes are connected to both sewer and water lines. One line feeds clean water into the home, while the other takes dirty water away. Knowing where these lines are in your area help you identify issues earlier. Sometimes, back flow can be caused by an overflowing water line. If you know where these lines are, then you can watch for overflow. This will help you avoid messes.
